Hatton House Diaries

One day, we decided to buy a 125 year old Victorian House in Des Moines, Iowa…….

After living in Des Moines for almost 20 years, I’ve finally found my dream home. I grew up in a 100+ year old house in Montclair, New Jersey. For years, we searched for a home with some history here in Des Moines, Iowa. We found all that we wanted and more in the River Bend Neighborhood, at the house built by John and Anna Hatton in 1886-1887, which we  call “The Hatton House.”

Now we live here, raising our two children, trying to learn everything we need to know about historic preservation, remodeling, and raising and preparing more of our food at home. We are searching for a way to share this house with Des Moines and the world. We’ve thought about having my former store, Simply for Giggles, here. We’ve thought about having an art gallery here. We’ve thought about turning this place into a bed and breakfast, or an artist/writer retreat. You’ll just have to see what unfolds along the way with us!

Hi, I am not super computer literate, but I will try this to contact you. I was at the renovators talk on Saturday and remembered your comments about the staircase. I happened to be looking at Craigs list today and found someone offering a 100 year old staircase. I know nothing about it, but thought you might be interested. I hope to put the link here too.
